Professor Philip Rahtz graduated from freelance excavator to academic archaeologist via the power of his publications, which included Rescue Archaeology (1974). He founded the Department of Archaeology at the University of York and was a member of many public archaeological bodies. His publications include the sites of Cannington, Glastonbury Tor, Cadbury Congresbury, Deerhurst and Wharram Percy as well as two guides to how to become an archaeologist. He was interested in all things archaeological, including ethno-archaeology.
