Charles Kellywas born in Columbia, South Carolina, and following several semesters at the University of South Carolina, he was called to active naval duty in 1952. Honorably discharged in 1953, he joined the F.W. Woolworth Corp. and was ultimately promoted to vice president of the food service division before opting for early retirement in 1989.
