When Leslie reluctantly agrees to take part in Lymeford Amateur Dramatic Society's latest production, he soon discovers there is more drama offstage than on. An obnoxious director, a philandering lead, and a washed-up professional make for high tension. When a member of the cast disappears, everyone thinks it's a protest, but Leslie is suspicious. He decides to investigate, assisted (and sometimes hindered) by the inimitable Gloria.
There are suspects and there are clues, but none of it explains what has happened, or even confirms Leslie's theory that a crime has been committed. Will Leslie's maverick partner, Bennett, step in and help make sense of the plot?
