There are many real-world scenarios across a range of industry domains in which a remote helper is needed to help a local worker to operate on physical objects. How to better support this type of remote collaboration has been researched for a long time. However, very few of tools and systems that were developed for such a purpose have been used in practice. Due to recent advancements in AR/VR, mobile and wearable technologies, it has become possible to develop more user-friendly systems to be used in the real-world settings. The authors have been working on this topic for more than 10 years and this book is a collection of their research findings and engendering results. The book starts with a general introduction on the topic summarizing the current state of art of the research in the field to give the reader an overview. Then in second chapter, the book takes a detailed look on how shared visual space has been implemented to build common ground between the collaborators. In the next few chapters, different ways of conveying gesturing information for guiding purposes will be introduced, followed by how hand gestures can be combined with other communication cues such as gaze information and sketches for better collaboration. Applications of such collaboration are introduced and discussed. Finally, the book finishes with discussion of current challenges and future work.
