Someone is terrorizing the young women of Lafferton. But what is the link between the seemingly random deaths? Is the rifle shooter also the revolver killer? Simon Serrailler, Lafferton's golden bachelor (for whom, however, the years do not pass in vain), must face not only a murderer who seems to have a privileged mind, but a family situation that threatens to explode in the most catastrophic and painful. The arrival of his sister from Australia, the terrible illness of his brother-in-law and his father's love affairs add pressure to an investigative process that always seems to be in tow of the assassin's forecasts. And this soon turns into a race against the clock. As if all this were not enough, Lafferton has been chosen as the scene of a wedding with the assistance of the royal family, with the security problems that this entails.

First installment of the series starring curator Simon Serrailler. A lonely woman vanishes into the fog in Lafferton, a small English town. The town police do not give it importance, but the young detective sergeant Freya Graffham, recently arrived from London and under the orders of Inspector Serrailler, is not resigned to filing the case, especially after finding a note among the belongings of the missing person and an expensive set of cufflinks.

The unexpected disappearance of Daivd, a boy of just nine years old, makes the town of Lafferton remember its worst nightmares ("The various lairs of men"). It is evident from the moment that David has been kidnapped first thing in the morning at the door of his house, but the most dire hypotheses about the motives and purposes of whoever carried out such a crime do not take long to circulate. little seems to be strangely linked to high-end car theft and smuggling.
