When seventeen-year-old Noomi Perez douses herself in gasoline and lights a match, she knows in her heart her suicide attempt will fail. After ten attempts—now eleven—in the years since her father died and she began experiencing strange, blinding attacks of darkness she calls “shadows,” she has learned by now she cannot hurt herself, no matter how hard she tries.
The next day, during a hike up a snowy mountain with her wilderness therapy group, Noomi meets a boy with iridescent eyes. When he pulls her back from the edge after another attack of darkness, she realizes he knows something about the shadows that haunt and hunt her.
As the shadows grow stronger and threaten to swallow her whole, the lines are blurred between what is real and what is imagined, and Noomi realizes she has to find a new path forward. The path she charts will open her eyes to worlds she could never have imagined—and put her in more danger than she could ever have believed.
