Fragments on Ethical Subjects

by George Grote

Published 1 January 1992
The application of utilitarian standards to the revered "ancients" was a controversial matter. These "Fragments" collected together after Grote's death, consist of four papers. "Ethics" and "Politics" clearly intended for the great study of Aristotle that remained unfinished when Grote died in 1871. The unifying theme of the whole work is the exposition and defence of utilitarianism, of which doctrine Grote was one of the most forceful and vigorous advocates.
