This chronology provides two parrallel sets of information: first, a detailed year-by-year list of important events around the globe: secondly, on the facing page, information on major areas of human achievement and concern, including government, education, social welfare, science, art, music, literature and drama. Starting at the turn of the century, it goes up to events such as the election of Nelson Mandela as the president of South Africa and ex-President Carter's visit to North Korea. Particular attention has been given to US coverage.
