This work covers DEC's Alpha line of RISC-based computers, their 64-bit architecture and the Alpha VMS operating system, which will replace DEC's VAX/VMS. It considers Alpha's architecture, comparing it to RISC architectures, and discusses migration issues from VAX/VMS to Alpha VMS. In addition, the implementation of Alpha in two major operating systems, VMS and OSF/1, is discussed. Systems operators and analysts should benefit from the advice and Alpha software product review contained in the work.
