This book provides an overview of teaching about Europe for all teachers seeking to further pupils' understanding of the significance of Europe - its past, present and future status. The author describes approaches to teaching about Europe which are illustrated with a wide range of references both to European initiatives and to educational developments - for instance changes in the teaching of history, geography and modern languages, as well as innovations in extra-curricular activities with an international dimension. She draws on the education programme of the 23-nation Council of Europe. The book contains resource material for teachers, such as useful addresses and suggestions for exchanges and visits to museums, galleries and other institutions throughout Europe which are helpful to furthering European awareness. It should prove essential reading for all teachers who need European material and ideas for their classroom practice.
