Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is efficiently transmitted by the sharing or use of contaminated needles. This publication is aimed at governmental and non-governmental organizations involved in the planning, coordination and implementation of strategies and programmes for HIV prevention among injecting drug users. It captures the details of a range of practices in order to provide useful lessons and offer references for those working in the field of drug abuse and HIV / AIDS prevention. The first three chapters are dedicated to 20 case studies, which focus on fieldwork, political mobilization and strategy development, and training and networking. The final chapter, which is aimed at policy makers, summarizes overall lessons learned and challenges for the future.
