This text describes how crop plants synthesize and accumulate sucrose, fructan, starch, cellulose, oils, rubber and protein. The biosynthesis of each crop is described in relation to the form of the final synthesized product, such as starch granules and cotton fibres. The future development of each crop product is examined in relation to the biochemistry of synthesis and the potential for modification by genetic engineering.
