This series of modern world history aims to present stimulating new material beyond the range of conventional narrative textbooks. Pupils are encouraged to examine primary and secondary sources and to develop historical skills. Original source material included comprises written documents, photographs, maps and charts, which are accompanied by details placing them in context. Titles reflect GCSE examination requirements and are aimed especially at those courses where the study of a topic or period in depth is required. A selection of questions about the topic is also included. This book traces the major developments in Japan's history from the time of the Shogun to the present day. It looks at Japan's involvement in World War II, its relationship with the outside world and changes in the country's political, social and economic life as seen through the eyes of the people involved.
