First published in 1852, Sketches of Our Life at Sarawak is based on the journal and letters home of Harriette McDougall, who travelled in 1848 with her husband the Revd Francis McDougall as missionaries to Sarawak, at the invitation of the Rajah, Sir James Brooke. Whether describing the Chinese Insurrection, or the plotting of the Malays, or the presence of pirates which infested the seas from Singapore to China - she emerges as a perceptive and intelligent woman, deeply involved in everything around her, and affectionately devoted to the people whom she believed she had been called by God to serve.
