Little Wolf Star is a Pawnee Indian boy who lived on the Nebraska plains many years ago. As he makes friends with a wild wolf pup, he learns about the animals after which he was named.
David and Kate are staying with their grandmother in Alaska, when one day they encounter a mother grizzly bear and her cubs. Frightened, the children play dead, and the bear does not attack them. When summer arrives, the kids hike with their grandmother and see the grizzlies and other animals in their natural environment.
Captain Jim tells young Zach and Mandy about orcas, or killer whales. The kids learn that killer whales aren't dangerous to people, but mainly to seals and penguins whom they hunt for food.
