Brett Conroy, the gun-slinging boss of the town of Macey's Folly, finds his iron grip on the settlement slipping away when a mysterious stranger arrives. His chief gunman makes the mistake of thinking the stranger is only a city dude and soon comes to regret his error. Aided by the shyster lawyer Elias Marlin plus a crooked mayor and sheriff, Conroy tries every brutal trick to get rid of the stranger. But the stranger swears to destroy Conroy's hold on the town and names himself "The Paleface Killer". When the courageous Tracey Lee throws in her lot with the puzzling stranger, the scene becomes set for a maelstrom of murder and mayhem, which few will survive.

An amazing discovery in the mountains leads to some very odd events in the little Arizona town of Mountain Peak. When a man is found dead on the mountain trail - the dust around his body undisturbed by footprints, no signs of external injury or indication of how he died - it's left to Mayor Randle Meredith to provide some answers.
