EARLY CHILDHOOD MATH

The DLM Early Childhood Program Math Guide is designed to help children build the skills they¿ll need to truly understand math. Under Construction: Beginning Math helps children extend pre-number concepts to numeration, measurement, fractions, place value, and money. This innovative teacher¿s guide is built upon four fundamental beliefs that make it incredibly successful in helping children build a conceptual understanding of math. Those beliefs are:
- Teaching math is a sequence that allows children to build on what they already know. It allows them to form a conceptual understanding of math as opposed to a rote understanding.
- Young children learn by doing. When children control, manipulate, and arrange objects, they internalize concepts that make sense of the world.
- Children are more motivated to learn when the material is interesting to them ¿ and relevant to their world.
- Consistency in teaching keeps children from becoming confused. If children are taught to say, ¿greater than,¿ and, ¿less than,¿ when talking about sets of bottle caps, they can transfer that understanding of mathematical language to, ¿Five is greater than four but less than six.¿, when they begin talking about numbers.
