Looking at the ways in which local government is responding to industrial and technological restructuring, this text assesses local government policy initiatives in a range of industries including traditional industries such as coal mining and textiles; mass production manufacturing industries such as the motor industry and aerospace; and newer industries including such services as telecommunications, financial services and culture. In separate chapters each dealing with a specific sector, the authors survey industrial change and policy responses at the local level. The book draws upon relevant experience from Europe and the USA and concludes with a discussion of the likely effects on local policy of increasing European integration.
