This text looks at the organizational psychology of teams and team management and why teams can be such positive forces in organizations. It shows how valuable effective teams can be and goes on to discuss: what different teams look like; how managers can go about building a team; and how teams can influence their own organizations. This text aims to improve the reader's awareness of how to make the most of their team, and enhance their understanding of what makes that team tick. The considerable amount of management literature showing the effectiveness of teams is reviewed, and the text includes a number of case studies as well as discussions of the psychological mechanisms which underpin the organizational process. By explaining these processes, managers will gain enough understanding of what is going on, psychologically, to be able to see for themselves why a particular course of action would be either helpful or counter-productive in effective team building.
