This is an introduction to statistics, giving mathematics students a guide to the fundamental concepts of the subject. It shows them how to design experiments statistically, and how to explore and analyze data. It also indicates what might reasonably be expected from any set of data. Students are shown the art of "guesstimation", and how to recognise errors and inaccuracies. Correct approaches, common misconceptions and common abuses of statistics are also covered, giving students a through grounding in what is often perceived as a complicated subject.
