Maui wonders what it would be like to live forever. He enters the Goddess of Death and discovers stars, heavens and the gods. Missing his people, he is sent home by the highest god, Rehua, who gives him the special gift of being able to transform himself.
On a mission to discover how fire is made, Maui visits his Aunty Mahuika. Each time he is given a flame he tells her he has lost it, until he eventually has lost all but one of her flames. In a rage she flings her last flame into a kaikomako tree. Maui takes a piece of hard mahoe wood and rubs it against a branch of the tree, bringing fire for eternity to his people. .
Maui's mother is relinquish her baby to the sea, thinking he has died. As a young man he seeks her out and is reunited with her.
Maui wonders where his mother goes each evening. One night he follows her and finds she visits his father, and the family is reunited. Maui then meets his grandfather, and secures his jawbone, which has magical properties
