This report provides a detailed overview of the various transitions affecting people in their 50s and beyond. It challenges calls for an upward revision of retirement ages, arguing that paid employment is neither a feasible nor an attractive option for an increasing proportion of women and men moving into their fifties and beyond. "Transitions from Work to Retirement": brings together diverse empirical and theoretical studies to assess changes in the life course; includes a special analysis of the British Household Panel Survey to support its findings; summarises important research from the US and Europe as well as the UK; and provides important recommendations on managing work and retirement for those involved in social and public policy.
