In true Japanese tradition, Miyake designs clothes to dress a Samurai or a Blade Runner. This publication details the work of a designer who has made an art of fashion. It coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Miyake Design Studio, which was opened in Tokyo in 1970 and represents Miyake's collaborative enterprise with a close group of friends who have remained affiliated to the studio ever since - including art director/designer, Eiko Ishioka, painter/graphic artist, Tadanori Yokoo, and architect, Tadao Ando. In 1988, Miyake started work on a major theme: pleating fabric. This book features many photographs of these designs. The photographers who have participated in this book include Michael Woolley, Robert Mapplethorpe, Albert Watson and Oliviero Toscani.
