This volume considers the range of procedures currently in use for headteacher appraisal in the light of current changes in the relationship between schools and LEAs. Central to the text is a number of case studies focusing on the appraisal of ten headmasters. Key themes highlighted by the case studies are: who should appraise headteachers; different styles of appraisal; the subversion of the appraisal process into consultancy; and the role of LEA appraisers. The text also gives first-hand accounts of the challenge of appraisal from the viewpoints of an LEA adviser, a primary headteacher and an appraisal co-ordinator.
