Prepared by the Highway Innovative Technology Evaluation Center (HITEC), a CERF service center.

This report describes a HITEC evaluation designed to determine the basic capabilities and limitations of the MSE Plus System, manufactured by SSL, LLC, for use as a mechanically stabilized earth retaining system. The evaluation was conducted based on material, design, construction, performance, and quality assurance information outlined in the HITEC Protocol. The MSE Plus System features rectangular segmental precast concrete facing panels and galanized welded wire, grid-type soil reinforcement.

The Highway Innovative Technology Evaluation Center (HITEC) serves as a clearinghouse for implementing highway innovation by providing nationally-focused, collaborative evaluations of new products and technologies. This report, ""Guidelines for Evaluating the Performance of Highway Sound Barriers"", was developed as part of the HITEC evaluation plan for U.S. Gypsum's Sight and Sound Screen. The Sight and Sound Screen is a post-and-panel wall system designed to act as a sight and sound barrier for highways and as a privacy system for residential and commercial property owners. The HITEC evaluation will measure the performance of the Sight and Sound Screen against the criteria presented in this report, which reflect the needs of the highway community. While this evaluation plan was tailored to one product - as a service to state and local transportation officials - the report was expanded to provide guidelines that can be adapted for use with other types of sound wall systems.

In 1994, the Highway Innovative Technology Evaluation Center (HITEC) undertook a technical evaluation of the JMI Channel Bridge, a precast segmental overpass bridge system intended for use in either bridge replacement projects or new construction. A technical evaluation plan was developed in June 1995, consisting of two components: technical analyses and evaluation of design attributes and performance history, with emphasis on the unique aspects of this technology; and a full-scale demonstration of the technology (the results of which will be presented in a separate HITEC evaluation report). This report contains the findings of technical analyses and evaluation of the Channel Bridge.
