This guide is one of three titles to be added in 1991 to the "Walks" series. Earlier titles include "Walk the Lakes", "Walk Dorset & Hardy's Wessex" and "Walk Loch Lomond & the Trossachs". The easy-to-use spiral bound format has proved to be very popular with walkers and ramblers. There are 40 walks in this guide to the best walking areas in Devon & Cornwall. These are completely new walks, not featured in any other guides in the series. The walks vary from short strolls to more strenuous excursions. Walks are graded to take into account the distance and type of terrain covered, making it easy to judge which walks are suitable for families and which for more experienced walkers. Some of the routes are accessible by public transport and all of the walks in the guide start at, and return to, an area suitable for car parking, usually by a circular route. Round-trip distances are given. Walks are illustrated by detailed, specially designed maps showing the route clearly and there are accompanying step-by-step instructions. Each walk is contained within one page or two facing pages, making it unnecessary to turn pages while walking.
Along the route, features of note, interesting viewpoints and objects connected with local history or legend are drawn to the readers and explained. The first, introductory part of the guide details the history and special characteristics of the area as well as giving general advice on countryside walking.
