Radiant Heating

by R.G. Brown

Published March 1996
This volume examines the principles, technology and costs of medium- and high-temperature radiant heating systems, and provides guidance on system design, control strategies and related factors that must be considered to ensure optimal system operation. Its purpose is to help potential users, specifiers and designers of radiant heating systems choose appropriate systems that maximize the energy, environmental, comfort and cost benefits that may be available. Numerous examples of successful applications of radiant heating are illustrated. The guide briefly discusses the various methods available for sizing radiant heating systems, but does not reiterate the detailed calculations needed. Readers requiring to undertake detailed design should consult the appropriate source documents produced by CIBSE, EATechnology, British Gas, ASHRAE and others.
This application guide is an attempt to provide a concise introduction to the techology and efficient application of medium- and high-temperature radiant heating systems for the following audiences: heating system specifiers who need to compare different heating options for new buildings or refurbishment of existing ones; architects, services consultants, designers, installers, maintenance contractors, facilities managers and others who wish to gain a basic understanding of the principles and technology of radiant heating systems, their applicability and factors that affect system selection, specification, control, efficiency, installation and operating costs; and building managers who want to improve the operation and control of existing radiant heating systems.
