v. 18/97

This title notes impending European standards to limit the atmospheric emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) from central heating/hot water gas and oil fired boilers. It summarises the results of a two-year programme of research into the effects of commercial boiler design and operational factors on NOx and CO emissions in particular, plus CO2 and excess oxygen. The book also reports laboratory results for 12 different types of boilers in the range 30-225 kW and site tests of 18 boilers in the range 80-335 kW producing hot water for central heating and asserts that flue gas emissions are very dependent on the design of the boiler and burner. Boilers with conventional atmospheric burners tend to emit much higher levels of NOx than boilers with pre-mixed and conventional packaged burners.
