Since the early 1970s, thermotropic liquid crystals have assumed an increasing importance in the area of molecular electronics and display devices. A direct outcome of all this activity in research and in commercial exploitation has been that the subject of liquid crystals has become known to an increasing audience of scientists from a range of disciplines. This book has been produced to assist those entering or new to the field to understand the essentially multi-disciplinary nature of the subject and the associated terminology. Each chapter begins with an introduction of the basics of structure, properties, phase, etc, providing all disciplines with a common introduction and terminology.
