No.1/2003

This title presents a guide to the application of non-destructive testing (NDT) in condition monitoring regimes. It examines six, established NDT techniques, describing the testing methods and the effectiveness of each method in detecting faults in different types of building services plant. The book provides guidance on the cost-effectiveness of each method, lists relevant standards and suggests further reading. It also includes details of trial applications, briefly describes five, innovative inspection methods which have potential for use in condition-based maintenance and three condition monitoring fact sheets as case studies.

This "Application Guide" has been drafted following consultation with safety consultants, regional electrical companies, the National Grid Company, panel manufacturers, thermal imaging contractors, building owner/operators, equipment manufacturers and the Health and Safety Executive. The BSRIA has been working in partnership with thermal imaging consultants, electrical panel manufacturers and building owner/operators to improve the practice of thermal imaging of electrical panels for use in commercial buildings. The project has received 50 per cent funding from the Department of the Environment, and includes work at Loughborough University funded by the EPSRC. It formed part of the LINK Programme on Construction Maintenance and Refurbishment. The report is offered as guidance to assist in carrying out a site-specific risk assessment for those wishing to carry out thermal imaging of electrical panels supplied with up to 1000 V ac). It is intended to help in meeting their needs and legal obligations. The document is based on the regulations and published guidance, and best practice at the time of publication as listed in the appended references.
