Key Forests for Threatened Birds in Africa
by N.J. Collar and Simon N. Stuart
Published 1 January 1988
This book is by the authors of "Threatened Birds of Africa and Related Islands" (an UCBP/IUCN Red Data book publication). This book describes the 75 forests which must be conserved to protect the forest-dwelling birds identified in the earlier work. Most of the forests covered were chosen because they hold more than one threatened bird species, and the book presents a powerful argument for treating the forest as the unit of conservation concern, rather than the single species. Although primarily intended to set priorities for conservation, the book can be used as a guide to finding Africa's rarest birds. Rare primates and other fauna and flora are also included in the site descriptions. "This little book will serve as a handy manual for all those concerned about the future of African forests" - "Wilson Bulletin". "A commendable summary of what is known. Confirms how effective birds can be as indicators of sites of general biological significance" - Ostrich.
