Fourth-grade students and other young readers will learn about interactions of people with natural geographical features of Wisconsin. Emphasizing both historic and new maps, "Learning from the Land" explores land use from early Indians to the Black Hawk War, looking at mining, logging, farming, and environmental issues.
Voices and Votes interweaves history and civics, providing a comprehensive overview of state, tribal, and local governance in Wisconsin. The accompanying teacher's guide by Bobbie Malone encourages students to compare and contrast historical circumstances with current events, so that young learners come to understand both the differences and the continuities in our evolving democratic society.
Working with Water teaches young readers about the many ways water has shaped Wisconsin's history, from glaciers to stewardship. It touches on geography and hydrography; transportation networks of Indians and fur traders; the Erie Canal; shipwrecks, lighthouses, shipping, and shipbuilding; fishing, ricing, "pearling" (clamming), and cranberry cultivation; lumbering, milling, and papermaking; recreation, resorts, tourism, and environmentalism.
