Information security is vitally important for all computer users, particularly for personal computers. However, many of the products currently on the market are surrounded by unnecessary mystique and secrecy. This book provides an insight into how information security operates through the detailed description of a specific security system - a data encryption program written by the author for IBM PCs and compatibles. Other commercially-available data encryption products are also analyzed. An introductory chapter defines the concept of data encryption in non-technical terms and the Data Encryption Standard (DES) algorithm on which the author's software is based is also defined. A complete listing of the program is provided in the appendix.
