A History of Greece

by George Grote

Published 1 January 2000
George Grote's "History of Greece" still stands as one of the great works of Greek scholarship. Translated into French and German, the "History" was one of the most influential factors in shaping the European conception of ancient Greece during the 19th century. This is a complete reprint of the 10-volume 4th edition. Published posthumously in 1872, it is considered the best edition, containing a portrait, maps and plans plus a note by Mrs Harriet Grote. Grote's exposition was based on a thorough knowledge of the subject and, as a friend of James Mill, John Stuart Mill, Jeremy Bentham and David Recardo, a background in politics, philosophy and economics. The "History" is written in an accessible style, with portraits of Greek political and philosophical thought.
