The transition of dockyards, specialised brownfield sites, long associated with national pride and sea power, to civilian uses, provokes particularly complex challenges for economic and community regeneration, conservation and appropriate reuse. These sites are particularly important to the future of once defence dominated communities who may be active participants in the transition process, or excluded from decision making. Varying national systems of disposal of government assets and regulatory regimes for the protection of historic sites and structures may inhibit or enable the creative reuse and investment vital to bringing dockyards to sustainable new life. Drawing on case studies, this multidisciplinary book highlights recent transitions of key historic naval sites to civilian uses across the world. It will be of interest to a wide range of readers including defence and cultural heritage ministry staff, urban designers, naval, military and social historians, building conservationists, industrial archaeologists, and local government and community representatives.
