Redirecting Energies

by Peter Colley

Published 20 April 1997
Global energy industries are undergoing fundamental change. New opportunities for power and wealth are being created for big businesses, but the will and power of governments to control these businesses is being eroded. Communities and nations are being impoverished by the financing demands of the new energy infrastructure and the labour situation is worsening as the industries employ an ever decreasing number of people. This book looks at the possibilities for a sustainable energy future and considers the role of the labour movement in this context. It charts the social and economic history of the energy industries, the emerging crises for labour and the environment and the options for change. Additionally, the implications of the current and potential industry restructuring for the labour movement are addressed.
