Speaking and listening are an integral part of whole language development and therefore need to be encouraged at an early age. The activities in this book are designed to foster a sense of purpose for speaking and listening, developing confidence and competence from a basis in the child's own world. The activities are based around areas which are likely to be found in most playgroups, nurseries and reception classes: sand and water; outside; role play; art and craft; construction toys; quiet games; on the carpet and the discovery area. Special attention is drawn to forging links wih parents and speaking and listening in a multicultural society.

This resource is full of ideas to help early years teachers support and develop their children's ability and confidence as writers. Building on the skills and experience that young children bring with them to school, the book provides a wealth of activities that lay firm foundations for National Curriculum work. Chapters include getting stared, writing's all around, early ways into writing and playing with words.
