Emphasis is placed on communicative competence and grammar. There is also a clear revision system. This title is part of the "Macmillan Modern Languages" series which is a complete sequence of language courses in French, German and Spanish. The course aims to help pupils understand and therefore have a positive attitude towards speakers of these languages and the countries where they are spoken. The course is designed to make language learning enjoyable and so encourage pupils to continue their language studies up to the age of 16 and beyond, by giving insights into language learning so that future language study is encouraged and facilitated. The course also shows that communication is a vital element in language learning and that success in communicating a message by whatever means will foster further successful language learning. The teacher's materials for these introductory courses - "Entrada", "Entrez 1" and "Herein 1" contain material for one academic year.
They include a tape cassette, tape transcript, solutions to puzzles, flashcards, overhead projector slides and worksheets which are supplied ready-punched and slide-bound for storage in an A4 ring-binder.

The Macmillan Modern Language series provides central coursebook materials in French, German and Spanish, leading to public examination at age 16 plus. "Herein 2" is the second book in the two-volume introductory course for German and is intended for beginners, leading on to "Reisepass Deutsch 1 and 2", which are the GCSE volumes in the series. The approach of this textbook is essentially communicative. Each chapter opens with a clear statement of functional objectives and contains a wide range of activities in all four skill areas which involve students in the active use of German. Further sections in each chapter provide background cultural information and clarification of the grammatical structure of German. There are separate revision chapters which occur at regular intervals, featuring self-profiling exercises which can be used to check the student's understanding. There is a cassette which accompanies this text.
