Essex Headlines looks at stories from the County's past which made the national newspaper headlines of the day. Some caused scandal and outrage, some related happier times and celebrations, some brought into the spotlight an individual's fight against injustice. The collection includes the earthquake which rocked the County in 1884, the horrors of the Witham railway crash IN 1905, the murderous criket match at Tilbury fort in 1776, and the scandalous vicar of Prittlewell, who attacked his beliringers with a carving knife. There are glimpses of a past world, when canals were the wonder of the age, and when fearless balloonists led the race to conquer the skies, sometimes paying the ultimate price.
