Dan Chantry, a struggling farmer, is threatened with foreclosure. Charles B. Morgan is an unsympathetic and greedy banker who ignores Chantry's honest efforts to clear his debt and turns a deaf ear to his pleas. The meeting between the men turns angry and Chantry storms out of the bank, vowing that should Morgan try to foreclose he will stop him. Then, Morgan is found murdered, and there are plenty of witnesses who heard Chantry's threats. And when the murder weapon is found in Chantry's saddlebag, his next stop is the gallows. On his way to town as a prisoner, storm conditions intervene and Chantry gets away. His plan is to gain time and return at some point to prove his innocence. But Al Blake, the marshal of Wolf Creek and a friend of Chantry is hot on his trail. Soon, the farmer is a prisoner again. Will Chantry be proved innocent or will he face the gallows?

Had Sam Limbo not been in jail for a murder he did not commit, he would hit the trail out of Dane's Bend, a powder-keg town awaiting the arrival of the notorious Donovan brothers, intent on avenging the killing of the youngest Donovan.There is also the problem of a bank with a secret stash for which the banker has hired private security who will pose more of a threat than security. The bank will also interest the Donovans. In fact Yancey Donovan's visit was probably to reconnoitre. So when Limbo gets the opportunity to break out of jail he grabs it, only to return, the lure being the marshal's daughter.It falls to Limbo to save the town that wanted to hang him.
