A bumper-size object-recognition book, "First Words" is intended for use with very young children. It contains over 200 familiar objects from around the house to be looked at and talked about. The words are organized into thematic sections that follow the pattern of a child's day at home. As well as pictures of objects to identify it contains pictures showing the objects in use - often amusingly - to encourage conversation and vocabulary extension. It is an ideal book for parents and other adults to use at all stages of a young child's development from learning to talk to learning to read. The author, Jane Salt worked as a primary school teacher with special responsibility for language development and literacy.
