by Saviour Pirotta

Published 9 February 1999

This beautifully illustrated collection of stories from one of the world's richest story-telling traditions is ideal for young readers and for reading aloud to 7-11 year-olds.

There are stories of how the world began, Chinese dragons, zodiac monkeys, legendary monsters, Chinese New Year and hopping ghosts.

Each story is introduced with information about its origins and the people who first started telling it, and maps locate the places associated with it. The book includes a glossary and sources of further information as well as ideas for activities that children can do to explore the stories and their culture further.

Retold by an experienced writer of stories for the young, this is a book to inform and entertain in equal measure.

Stories from China

This work collects stories from China and retells them for children. It also contains traditional stories retold in a modern setting, while combining ghost stories, creation myths, hero stories, and traditional tales. From stories of boys who turn into dragons to a hospital where there's a Hopping Ghost. The "Multicultural Stories" series brings together storytellers and artists to retell tales from around the world and each title contains colourful artwork, but also allows plenty of space for the text, so that the richness of the different oral traditions is able to come out. Each story is introduced by a short information section that tells the reader about the place and people from which the story comes, and allows children to put the story into context.
