The New Right is constantly in the public eye in the Federal Republic and has assumed the role of intellectual vanguard of the Right since the start of the seventies. It promotes an assertive nationalism, German cultural distinctiveness and the idea that German Unification should mark the end of discussions about responsibility for the Nazi past. It is hostile to the vision of a multicultural Germany and to European integration. This is the first full-length study in English of Germany's New Right. In political terms the New Right occupies the grey area between the mainstream conservative and the extreme right-wing parties (DVU, NPD, Republikaner). In cultural terms the New Right is caught between the need for reassuring traditions and beliefs and an awareness that the available traditions and beliefs have lost much of their meaning. The author explores what happens when New Right politics meets New Right culture.
