This is a volume in the "Nuffield Co-ordinated Science" series, a GCSE scheme designed for fourth and fifth year secondary school pupils. It enables the student to follow a broadly based science scheme, emphasizing the links between the different branches of science, but providing separate textbooks for biology, chemistry and physics. The complete course consists of three pupils' books, three sets of copymaster worksheets to accompany them and a single teachers' guide. This is the guide for teachers which covers both years of the course. It follows the pupils' books chapter by chapter and co-ordinates the three sciences. It focuses on the teachers' requirements and what they need to know to teach the course and links the components of the resource with the proposed MEG GCSE course and the National Curriculum. It also contains technical information. The course emphasizes the skills and processes of science as well as the pure knowledge content. The main ideas are introduced by developing them in contexts that are familiar to the reader and the industrial, economic, environmental and social impact of science is also stressed.
The contribution made by distinguished men and women to the development of scientific ideas is also described. A worksheet is also available for each subject.
