Thomas Steven embarked from Moscow on a remarkable journey in 1890, which was to take him on horseback to the Black Sea. Suspicion of strangers in this feudal land was such that he was taken for everything from a government spy to an antichrist, intent on withering souls and bringing plague to cattle. This is his account of the journey, during which he met Tolstoy, brutal Cossacks, priests, officials and the ordinary people of Russia. Thomas Stevens was also the author of "Around the World on a Bicycle".
