Historical Dictionary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
by Seth Spaulding and Lin Lin
Published 24 June 1997
The goal of the Historical Dictionary of UNESCO is to make transparent what UNESCO does, how it does it, what some of the effects of its work have been, and how it organizes to accomplish its goals. Countries sending delegations to meetings and conferences should find the dictionary useful in getting an overview of the Organization and of its various programs over the years. A result of a joint effort of faculty and graduate students from a number of UNESCO Member States at the University of Pittsburgh, the Dictionary includes an extensive bibliography of significant articles and books about the organization, as well as key publications by UNESCO. An extensive chronology is included, listing a sampling of program, budget, administrative, and other events for the entire period of UNESCO's existence (through the mid-1990s) to give a flavor of how the organization evolved. It will be an indispensable reference for those interested in international dialogue in education, science, culture, and communications, as well as those wishing to draw on UNESCO resources for scholarly work.
