Every civil war is a tragedy for the nation involved, and Russia's tragic loss of about 13 million lives within the five years between 1917 and 1922 speaks for itself. The main instrument with which the Bolsheviks imposed communism on Russia was the Red Army, a force whose origins lay amongst the factory workers who laid down their tools and took up arms as a way of expressing their grievances against the Imperial Russian state.
