Warren Clarke and Colin Buchanan star in an original full-cast television episode specially adapted for audio. Convalescing from a stroke, Dalziel attends a retirement party for a colleague, Donald Fitzgerald. But he's not in a celebratory mood: he blames Fitzgerald for losing a recent case against long-standing adversary Danny Macer. And he's even angrier when Macer turns up at the celebrations. But his anger turns to suspicion when Fitzgerald is found dead on the golf course the next morning, killed in a similar way to Ted Barnes, the victim in the Danny Macer case. As the team examine Fitzgerald's personal life - including his affair with physiotherapist Rachel Waller - Dalziel goes after Macer. Concerned about Dalziel's health, and his obsession with Macer, Pascoe voices his fears to their boss, ACC Stella Applegarth, who orders Dalziel to go back on sick leave. Pascoe takes over, and soon finds some evidence suggesting that Dalziel's instincts may have been right: a key leading to a bank vault and a suitcase full of money. As Pascoe explores the implications, a second murder occurs. Can he crack the case and vindicate his boss?
The original soundtrack from the BBC TV series, with linking narration by John Telfer.
