"Fire River" tells the story of Joel Kane who left his father's ranch at the age of fifteen. It's ten years later, and he wouldn't have come back except for his father's urgent plea. Joel learns that his father has willed the ranch to a man who doesn't want to wait any longer for his prize. In "Guns of Freedom" Cain Ruby, an American adventurer is hired to assist in the invasion of Cuba. His mission: to blow up an infamous Spanish prison and to find the missing daughter of a wealthy merchant. When Ruby sees the horrors of Spanish oppression in Cuba, he's shocked, and realizes that his loyalties have been dangerously misplaced.
The Vega is a lush ranching plain in the shadow of Stonebreaker's Ridge. When Jim Ryan returns to the ranch he inherited from his father, he looks to expand. He offers to buy the S-Bar Ranch from Tom Strickland but furious, he orders him off the place. When Tom is killed, suspicion falls on Jim.
