The bandwidth available using optical fibers and free space links is considerable but growth in traffic driven by Internet based applications means that it will be stretched within the near future. To design the systems of the future, it is necessary to encompass both baseline performance prediction and the improvements by correction techniques such as coding and equalization. This text gathers together the key techniques ranging from information theoretic limits to the impact of physical impairments for the first time, enabling workers in the field to tackle design and optimization problems rapidly and effectively.
